Charles M. Bogert's copy with his library stamp on the front & back wrapper & title page. Brief notes written on 5 pages. Spine reinforced with library tape. This study "is something f an anomaly in bology. It is a paper that introduced new concepts concerning an entire vertebrate class and presented a rigorous framwork for experiemental studies which has survived with remarkably little change for three decades. A major field of herpetological research can be traced directly to the appearance of this work, and for more than a quarter of a century nearly every paper dealing with the thermal relations of reptiles has referred to 'Cowles and Bogert 1944.' Inside with considerable foxing which seems to be typical for this work. Contains the bookplate of G.F. de Witte and J. v. Bedriaga's signature dated 1874 on the flyleaf. Reprinted by SSAR in 1973 with an introduction by Robert Mertens in which he writes, "Fitzinger's most important herpetological work, however, was his "Systema Reptilium," first published in 1843 and now available in reprint. Unfortunately this work remained incomplete because he published only the first part of it. This treats only the "Amblyglossae" group of lizards, which Fitzinger divided into three parts, The Dendrobatae [according to present classification, the families Chamaeleonidae, Agamidae (part.), Iguanidae (part.)], Humivagae (Iguanidae (part.) and Agamidae (part.)] and Ascalabotae (Gekkonidae)... For the study of reptiles and amphibians Fitzinger's work is of tremendous significance, not so much because of the nearly one hundred new generic and subgeneric names proposed, but because he always cites generic type species or "generotypes" (genotypes in the old sense). Even if the diagnoses are sometimes missing, these generic names are still valid apart from homonyms and younger synonyms. The last part of the book presents an overview of the geographical distribution of the "Amblyglossae.". $2000.00

"The present descriptive Catalogue contains a full account of nearly all the Australian Snakes discovered and recorded up to the year 1869, including the Sea Snakes observed on our coast. Original descriptions have been retained wherever it was possible, errors have been corrected, and the ranges of the various species defined. Much attention has been paid to the colours of living specimens, and to the changes ophidian reptiles undergo during the perios of growth. Frequent experiments have enabled me to distinguish between venomous and dangerous venomous snakes; and it must be a source of congratulation that, with the many new discoveries in this branch of nNatural History during the last ten years, not one really dangerous serpent has been added to our fauna." — Gerard Krefft, 1869. $6000.00

Roesel von Rosenhof, August Johann. (1753-)1758. Historia naturalis Ranarum nostratium / Die naturliche Historie der Froesche hiesigen Landes. Johann Joseph Fleischmann, Nuernberg, (10), viii, 116, 48 engraved plates (24 handcolored each with an uncolored key plate), 1 colored, engraved frontis. Folio, Leather spine and corners with marbled boards. Seven raised bands and gilt tooling on spine. A very clean copy of the most well known and most desirable book on amphibians.
"The present volume is one of the classics of amphibiology. The illustrations are of the finest and the whole work is admirably done. The title and text appear both in Latin and german and there is a preface by A. von Haller—altogether a very valuable, early contribution to the literature of the batrachia." — Wood, 1931.
August Johan Roesel was born into an Austrian noble family in Augustenburg, near Arnstadt, Germany on March 30, 1705. Following the early death of his father, his godmother, the reigning princess of Arnstadt-Schwarzburg, assumed responsibility for his education. She encouraged his artistic ability and in 1720 he was apprenticed to his uncle, Wilhem Roesel von Rosenhof, a well known painter. Four years later Rosel went to Nuremburg to continue his art training under the supervision of Johan Daniel Preisler.
In 1726 Rosel went to the Danish court in Copenhagen to paint portraits and minatures. His paintings were so well received that he was asked to settle in Denmark. Unwilling to stay in Denmark he returned to Germany in 1728. During his journey back to Nuremberg, a high fever forced him to to stay in Hamburg for four-weeks. While in Hamburg, an aquaintance brought him a copy of Maria Sybilla Merian's book, Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium (1705). This book inspired Roesel to do a similar study of German species.
After returning to Nuremburg, Roesel began studying the local fauna in his spare time. After years of study, the first part of his Der monatlich-herausgegebenen Insecten-Belustigung was published (1740). The book was praised for its outstanding illustrations, but Roesel also defined insects systematically and divided them into natural groups. Today he is considered the Father of German Entology.
Insects were not the only animals Rosel was studying, and in 1753, the same year he added von Rosenhof to his name, the first part of his Historia Naturalis Ranarum Nostratium/Die natürliche Histoire der Frösche hiesigen Landes was published. This book was completed in 1758 and Abrecht von Haller contributed a preface to the work.
The text of this book is in parallel columns of Latin and German, thus the double title. At a time when most zoological texts contained mere descriptions of animals (e.g., Catesby 1731-43. The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands; Seba 1734-1765. Locupletissimi rerum Naturalium Thesauri; or Linnaeus 1759. Systema Naturae), Roesel von Rosenhof described the natural history of amphibians in great detail. He could probably be considered the Father of Herpetological Natural History.
Roesel von Rosenhof had begun a companion volume on lizards and salamanders, but in early 1759 a stroke paralyzed his left side. He died shortly after on March 27, 1759. (Adler, 1989; Gues, 1975)

Schinz was a professor of zoology in Zürich and publishes a series of illustrated zoological works. The reptile volume was issued in both colored and uncolored editions. The 102 lithographic plates are recognized as being among the finer illustrations of these animals and was featured in Aramata's (1990) Atlas Anima volume 3 Amphibians and Reptiles — a book which is explores great natural history illustrations. The reptile volume is much more difficult to find than Schinz's volumes on fish, birds, or mammals.

"Wied's first exploration was in Brazil, where he spent the period 1815-1817 studying the natural history and primative Indian tribes of the forested areas in the coastal states north of Rio de Janeiro. His collections there were rich in reptiles, especially snakes. On returning to Neuwied he published his observations in three large works: a semi-popular account of the journey ("Reise nach Brasilien," in two volumes, 1820-1821, with appendix in 1850) which was translated into several languages, a scientific treatise on the vertebrates in a magnificent atlas of handcolored plates in folio ("Abbildungen," in 15 parts [1822]1823-1831), and a separate scientific text (Beitrage," in four volumes, 1825-1833, with herpetology mainly in volume one).
Prince Max, as he was known to his contemporaries, was the first well-trained naturalist to explore Brasil, and these books established his reputation as a biologist and ethnologist of the first rank. The 90 plates in the "Abbildungen," 56 of them on reptiles, were taken from originals drawn and colored by the prince himself, and these formed the basis for his descriptions of many new species." — Adler, 1989
"This excellent and finely colored Atlas of South American fauna was published both in German and French. The 15 parts (each with six plates) were issued at irregular periods." — Wood, 1931
"Ninety plates were published, in 15 Lieferungen of 6 plates each, accompanied by a separately printed text in German and French, covering the mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians of Wied's trip through the middle Atlantic forest. The plates bear no number or date; fortunately, the Isis von Oken reviewed at least 14 of the 15 parts, and I find it possible to establish [a] chronology for the reptiles." — Vanzolini, 1977
