Burdick, Alan. 2005. Out of Eden. Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, New York, 324 pgs. HB, dj "To be human is to change our habitat; this is one of the many insights in this thought-provoking account on the ecology of invasions, a hot new science in which new discoveries swiftly overturn old theories. Now that our habitat is global, creatures emigrate with us at an ever-accelerating pace, carried in ship ballast (a bivalve mollusk from England to Massachusetts), imported by nostalgic birders (once native birds returning from disappearance) or crawling into airplanes on their own (the brown tree snake from Australia to Hawaii). Even NASA's space probes carry potential invaders. If these creatures make new homes for themselves, they may eat other species into extinction, infect them with new diseases, even reconfigure an entire ecosystem. Burdick's fascination with the science is contagious, and he does a superior job of conveying the salient points of classic experiments. The Discover senior editor is at his best following invasion ecologists—a lively bunch—as they do their gritty, often ambiguous research in Guam and Hawaii, along the margins of the San Francisco Bay and on the deck of an oil tanker. His vivid descriptions add the pleasure of travelogue to the intellectual satisfactions of science: "Travel is a weekend away, a reward upon retirement, a chance gift won in a game show or a sweepstakes. Honey, we're going to Hawaii! Applied by biologists to nonhuman organisms, the phenomenon is known as the ecological sweepstakes, and it explains how life arrives at a place like Hawaii to begin with." This is a captivating book with wide-ranging appeal." Flip Brophy. (Publisher's Weekly). $20.00

Holbrook, John E. 1842. North American Herpetology; or, A description of the reptiles inhabiting the United States, Second edition. J. Dobson, Philadelphia, Frontis (variant of plate 1) 152 p., 24 plates, errata slip; (vi), 9-142 p., 20 plates, errata slip; (2) 128 p., 30 plates; 138 p., 35 plates, errata slip; (vi), 6-118 p., 38 plates, 3 errata slips. 5 Volumes, Quarto, original half red morocco and marbled boards with four raised bands and gilt lettering. Some wear to boards. Inside clean with minor foxing in a few volumes, overall a very fine set. Includes a variant of the Testudo polyphemus plate incerted as a frontis. The variant was drawn by G. Lehman and it is labeled "Testudo carolina." The actual drawing looks identical to the plate drawn by S. Cichowski and it may well be that this variant was merely mislabled on the letterpress after the lithography had been completed. The first comprehensive study of the reptiles of North America. John E. Holbrook is considered the "Father of North American Herpetology" based on this book. Its publication history of is quite curious however. The first edition contained four volumes, but the species accounts were not any any specific order. Shortly after the fourth volume was published, Holbrook wrote to each of the patrons and asked them to return the book because he was going to to reissue it in a second edition with a more natural organization. Apparently many of the patrons complied and the first edition copies were burned. This first edition was later completely revised by the author, and this five-volume, second edition was issued in 1842-43. The great Philadelphia lithographer, Peter S. Duval, executed the plates, and several of the plates are what Duval dubbed "lithotints," plates with several tones of printed color which were then finished by hand. The plates are beautifully drawn and colored. "While Holbrook's plates may not be as decorative as some of Audubon's, they have a much more convincing ring of scientific authenticity, as well as unbelievably delicate coloring" - McGrath. Born in South Carolina, Holbrook spent four years in Europe after gaining a degree in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He formed particular friendships with a group of eminent French zoologists, including Valenciennes, Duméril and Bibron. Their major area of study was reptiles, and Holbrook decided to follow their lead, returning to America in 1822 and settling in Charleston. While practicing medicine and filling the post of professor of anatomy at the newly constituted University of South Carolina, he undertook the preparation of the present work. The whole of Holbrook's great work on herpetology "at once took its place as one of the most valuable works upon reptiles published during the nineteenth century, receiving notable recognition in Europe, where Holbrook was regarded as the leading American zoologist of his day." The text about each species generally includes a detailed description (color, dimensions, etc.), geographical distribution, habits, and general remarks. Each species account also includes a plate of the species. Holbrook intended the work to include "with a few exceptions, descriptions of such Reptiles only as inhabit the United States, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains, and from Canada to the confines of Texas." "The plates are beautifully colored; and the work is worthy of a place in the library of the naturalist by the side of Audubon and Wilson" - Sabin. $25000.00

Krefft, Gerard. 1869. The Snakes of Australia; An Illustrated and Descriptive Catalogue of All known Species. Thomas Richards, Sydney, xxvi, 100 p., 12 plates. Original boards. Krefft is known today as the "Father of Australian Herpetology," however he initially emigrated to Australia in 1852 to join the gold rush. In 1857 he was hired by the National Museum as an artist and curator. later he moved to Sydney where he became the Curator of the Australian Museum. This book was the first comprehensive study of Austraian snakes. It was produced under duress. Unable to find a publisher for fis work, Krefft paid the Government Printer £225 to print 700 copies.<p>"The present descriptive Catalogue contains a full account of nearly all the Australian Snakes discovered and recorded up to the year 1869, including the Sea Snakes observed on our coast. Original descriptions have been retained wherever it was possible, errors have been corrected, and the ranges of the various species defined. Much attention has been paid to the colours of living specimens, and to the changes ophidian reptiles undergo during the perios of growth. Frequent experiments have enabled me to distinguish between venomous and dangerous venomous snakes; and it must be a source of congratulation that, with the many new discoveries in this branch of nNatural History during the last ten years, not one really dangerous serpent has been added to our fauna." — Gerard Krefft, 1869. $1500.00
